U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Susan Rice, traveled to Rwanda in late November to learn more about the agriculture sector there.

She was joined by Rwanda’s Minster of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), Dr. Agnes M. Abera-Kalibata, for a visit to the Masaka Dairy Development Center and the Dairy Quality Assurance Lab, where Director David Mupenzi demonstrated the various ways milk can be tested for bacteria, mastitis, water content, milk content, etc.

The dairy sector represents 16 percent of Rwanda’s agriculture sector as a whole. Ambassador Rice also visited crop intensification sites in Rwanda’s Northern Province, where Post-Harvest Handling and Storage Task Force Chairman Francois Nsengiyumua explained the Crop Intensification Program (CIP) and beneficiaries relayed to Rice how their lives had been impacted by the CIP (pictured above).
