Call for Proposals on Livestock and Nutrition Research

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Collaborative Research on Adapting Livestock to Climate Change is soliciting proposals on the topic of “Understanding Microbiomes to Improve Animal Health and Human Nutrition.” The resulting award will further strengthen Feed the Future linkages among agriculture, health and nutrition.

Researchers are beginning to appreciate the integral role that microbes play in the health, productivity and environmental impact of livestock systems.

The purpose of this new research is to enhance understanding of the role of microbes in human nutrition and animal health through the synthesis, implementation and analysis of livestock and human microbes associated with disease-causing pathogens that infect the intestinal tract. Humans and livestock share a number of these pathogens, and additional research will advance our understanding of how they impact health.

The call for proposals is open to researchers at U.S. universities and their partners, including at least one host-country institution or organization. The country focus is limited to Nepal and Uganda. The submission deadline is May 1, 2013.
