OPIC Supports$3.75 Billion in U.S. Investments Overseas in 2013

The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) set new records in its financial performance in Fiscal Year 2013. As the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, OPIC committed a record $3.75 billion in support of U.S. businesses investing in sustainable economic development projects in fast-growing markets and regions around the world. It also supported a record $1.2 billion in renewable energy projects, in sectors including wind and solar power, hydropower and biomass.

In addition, OPIC supported multiple agriculture and clean water projects in support of Feed the Future. These projects include:

  • The African Agriculture Fund, supported by OPIC with $50 million in financing, is focusing on food production in Africa by investing in farms as well as agricultural processing, services and infrastructure. The Fund is also investing in commercial farming operations with expansion potential and management training.
  • OPIC provided political risk insurance to the U.S. company Seaboard Corp., working to rebuild a key flour mill in Haiti that was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. The new facility – including a four mill, offices, warehouse, storage silos, machine shops and an electricity-generating plant – has increased its production capacity with modern equipment and is able to withstand greater seismic activity.
  • In Moldova, an OPIC loan supported the construction of a new grain loading terminal and an oilseed crushing facility by Kelley Grains Corporation S. R. L. The project has greatly improved Moldova’s storage logistics and processing infrastructure while enabling Moldova’s agricultural businesses to take advantage of growing export markets.

OPIC supports Feed the Future by working with host governments, private sector partners and other stakeholders to spur investments in agriculture in emerging markets. OPIC is also active in supporting sustainable agribusiness as part of its commitment to targeting renewable resources. To help stimulate investment in these markets, OPIC offers financing, political risk insurance and support for private‐equity investment funds.
